santa lucia day

We've never celebrated Santa Lucia Day.
I've always thought it looked so sweet.

This year, my son's teacher has assigned each of them
to do a report on another country's holiday traditions.
He chose Sweden.

Through his research we've all begun to learn about St. Lucia.
And the girls are very interested in celebrating on the 13th.
He has to make a poster, bring in some kind of craft or sing a song
(and he's not the singing type) so he chose to make a St. Lucia crown.

The girls wanted to make one too.
So I spent some time making up a template of leaves and berries.
And I'm offering it to you too.  In case you'd like to celebrate as well.
She has been wearing it non stop since we put it together.

St. Lucia is also known as St. Lucy.
Lucy stands for light.
And in case you were wondering about the lights, here's why she wears them.

In the middle of the night, St. Lucia, a Christian secretly brought food to feed the Roman Christians who had been persecuted by their country.  In order to carry the food each night, she would wear a crown of candles on her head.  Celebrations for Santa Lucia's Day began in the late 1700s in Sweden.

Another explanation went on to say that since December 13th is the shortest day, longest night of the year, it is the day historically that the Swedish would celebrate Christmas.
The oldest daughter will get up before the sun and prepare breakfast for her family.
Traditionally, she will serve a special bread called Lussakatter or St. Lucia buns and coffee.
Lussakatter also means cat buns.  I still haven't found the significance of the cat.
(If anyone knows, feel free to fill me in!)
But I did find a good step by step tutorial for making them.

The oldest daughter wears the candles, dressed in white with her sisters and brothers behind her,
while singing a traditional song.  It's really beautiful.

After we made this I did read that she often has 6, 7, or 8 candles.  So you can add more.
I hope you enjoy celebrating St. Lucia day, even if it's the first time like us!

Happy preparing for St. Lucia Day!
My girls are so excited to prepare the breakfast.
The younger one is a little more into it than the older, so they both can do it.
She's just worried that she doesn't know the words.
I told her it's ok, we won't sing because mommy doesn't know them either.

And...I was inspired to draw my own little St. Lucia girl.
You can buy this digital download to print at home.
It includes the print and a card design to give as gifts.

Now..counting my gifts.

monkey bar update

She did it.
Just one week from beginning to try...
she conquered the monkey bars.
I think we went to the park nearly every day.
I'm so proud of her determination.
It took us into the darkened night to get there,
but get there she did!

insta friday

I'm a day late, but here it goes.
Our instagram friday wrap up.
The week kicked off with a Christmas tree hunt.
Last year we went on an adventure train ride to cut down our own.
I would have loved to do it again.
But it was intermittently raining all weekend.
And I'm still having trouble breathing from some lingering chest something.

This season has been filled with the weirdest medical issues for me.
But we may have found one source of irritation.
That rain has been flooding into the trunk of my car because of a defect
into the moon roof.
And we found mold everywhere.
The sheer number of hours I spend in my car means I've been breathing that in.
Hoping and praying I'm nearing the end of it all.

So here we go...
The tradition at our local lot is that mommy does the
scouting, while the rest of them play hide and seek.
This year I walked in and immediately found THE one.
It's gorgeous and a noble fir.
I loved it and didn't need to search any further.
But we stayed nearly an hour longer for the hiding and seeking.
They love it.
A quick stop at the playground to practice the monkey bars.
Long story short is that the younger one has been obsessed for a couple years.
The older never really had an interest and didn't try.
But it has been bothering her recently.
And those bars are hard, especially if you're starting out bigger and older.
I mean have you tried them lately?

And then there was this little girl, maybe five who taunted
my sweet middle child, teasing her over how she is younger
than her and she can do them, what's wrong with you.

And there were tears.

And then a long talk with mommy about how that
little girl, you'll never see her again and she has no
importance in defining who you are in your life.

And how many adults can't do the monkey bars either.
And no one goes around asking each other can you do the monkey bars?
I can, can you?  Because it isn't something that defines who you are.

You are defined by who you are in Jesus.
You are a child of God.

He loves you to the moon and back and so do mom and dad,
just as you are.

You are fearfully and wonderfully made and you have
skills and blessings that he has chosen just for you.
But I know, right now you want to know how to do them.
And you will, you just need to practice.
So she waited until that little girl left.

And I held my tongue from talking to the little girl's dad who
was off playing basketball while his child played unattended.

And then she practiced.
And she was able to do one.
ONE simple monkey bar.
And most importantly she pushed through her fear.
And saw she could make progress.
She didn't let the taunting hold her back.
And that one bar, it was huge to me.
They came home and of course wanted to immediately decorate much of the tree.
Those boxes and the ladder still remain in my living room.
Because mom just hasn't found the energy to complete the job.
We all took a hot chocolate break to watch "Elf."
And my husband and I celebrated 16 years.
This picture doesn't do it justice.  But that sushi is called green sea bass.
It's sea bass inside with arugala salad with edamame on top.  It's one of my favorites.
Oh and the nativities had to come out.
I have loved them since I was a little child.
I'd kiss baby Jesus goodnight each night.
My girls are following in my footsteps
with their love of this story brought to life with little figurines.
This one my Aunt bought me in Alaska.
It is already broken in three places this year alone.
Due to miss Piper who just can't seem to help herself.
This one I bought with my own money, saved when I was 12 years old.
This one, a gift to my son.
These guys were made when I was in the sixth grade.
My mom recently found them. I guess we never painted them.
But I love having them.
This one, was a gift the year we were married.
And the mantle, It has my new free download.
Onto some Piper adventures.
She goes crazy seeing the kids through the window
and plays with them through the glass.
Training..going slow and steady.
I have her sitting on command, most of the time.
The 'heeling' thing, she's not liking that too much.
I just love her style.
And she wanted to take her American girl doll for the walk.
But the first curb created a face plant in the dirty gutter so
we decided that wasn't the best idea.
I love, love, love how they pretend play.
The day that ends I know will be a sad one.
So I'll capture it every chance I get.
Bible study..much needed mommy/girl time.
It was my turn to bring snack.
Two pinterest inspired ideas.
and
These were something I modified to make with
a Christmas feel..and cut the tomato in half so it could stand.
My attempt at some bokeh twinkle lights.
And my view in the morning as I have my quiet time.
These just struck me as pretty.
They're not our own yet.
That should happen sometime in January.
It's getting closer!
So onto my medical stuff.
The antibiotics for my foot.
After one week on them, turns out I'm allergic to one of them.
Wednesday night I broke out in hives
that just got worse through Thursday.
They made me come in to be checked.
This is the girls entertaining themselves while waiting.
Everyone always smiles at them and asks why they're not in school.
I don't like answering those questions.
But it's getting easier for me to just boldly say we homeschool.
And yesterday, we made up for some lost time while in the doctor's office.
Getting caught up and going over lots of things.
It was a good homeschool day.
One where I felt like I did a good job.
I acknowledge that in real 'school' you can't jump
up and down on the bench while waiting your turn.
But that's ok.  Things are different at home.
Our science co-op was cancelled because the host
family had some sick kids.
So we did the experiment at home.
We borrowed brother's fish to study how
fish behave differently in cold water versus warm.
And they were working hard with the reward of going to
the park when they were done.
The day didn't finish till after 4 so the park turned out to be dark.
But it was actually fun.
It was too dark to get a picture,
but that daughter I wrote about with the monkey bars.
The one who did just ONE.
She's up to SIX.
She practiced over and over and over.
And I'm so proud of her.
We hooped and hollered and cheered for her.
And she's determined to do it.
Just two more, till she gets all the way across.

And I leave you with a tea called Deep Breath
I got at whole foods.  It's to help me breathe.
Literally,
but very much figuratively.
Just breathe.
I think that's what the Lord is wanting from me.
Nothing more right now.
Sit.
Soak it all in.
And breathe.

let earth receive her king

UPDATE - I have decided to offer you a little Christmas present to
deck your halls... this artwork is now a free printable here...
If you decide to use it, I'd love for you to send me a picture of it in your
home.  I'd love to put together a post of all of the homes celebrating our
earth receiving her king!  Merry Christmas!

I've noticed something.
Each year as the Christmas carols begin playing.
A line from an old familiar tune jumps out at me in a different way.
In the same way that scripture can.
It causes me to really ponder the words.
Last year, it was "O Come Let Us Adore Him"

This year, the song is Joy To The World.
There is more than one line, but the one that struck me the most
and had me working away in the last couple of weeks is...

LET EARTH RECEIVE HER KING!

Because quite frankly isn't that what it's all about.

That we should all receive Him and lead others to as well.

And how much our world so badly needs a Savior.

A Savior that came here as a baby.

His sole mission, to rescue us.

He who continues to love us, heal us, lead us.

The list of His mercies and blessings goes on and on.

And He will return to rescue us once more.

To make all things right again, to erase evil forever.

Receiving Him.  What does that mean to you?

It has so many layers of meaning to me.
To calm and quiet myself, to focus on Him this season.
To be filled with gratitude for all He has done.
To prepare my heart for Him each day, more and more.
To receive His forgiveness.
To know that He knows I am human, I am sinful, I will make mistakes.
And He loves me anyway.  He came here on earth & died for me, for you
just so he could take those sins away and wash us all clean.

All He wants from me, from us is a relationship.
For us to know him, to RECEIVE him.

Yet to all who did RECEIVE him,
to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to
become children of God
John 1:12.

The old and new testament so beautifully blend together.  Because of Jesus, the door is open.
We are all welcome to be a part of God's chosen family.

So let's really RECEIVE Him.

And all of His promises for our lives.

We need him.

Not just for this season.

But for eternity.

It has been awhile since I've posted on a Monday.
I'll be linking up to Ann Voskamp's multitudes on mondays.
And returning to counting my gifts...
443.  Christmas lights
444. little birds flitting about in the wee hours of the morning.
445. a quiet house in that hour.
446. hot cocoa
447. family movie night
448. finding the perfect tree instantly
449. beginning truth in the tinsel this year!
450. health returning
451. children filled with excitement
452. a puppy showing progress
453. a new week

instagram friday

Oh what a week it has been.
I won't be showing you pics of some events.
Because they're just too gross.

Long story short is that I fell on a ramp at bible study,
wound up scraping the top of my foot.
Landed on my butt, sort of stunned on how it all happened.
Got some neosporin and a bandaid and thought that was that.

Until the next afternoon.  It started feeling weird.
Like there was all this pressure and it was hot.
I discovered the whole foot was swollen and red.
The infection was spreading up towards my leg.
And that had my doctor very concerned.

I'm now on two really heavy duty antibiotics.
Drugs I don't like being on.
But she said, "The other choice is you die of a foot infection."
Well ok, I don't like that choice even more.
I'm on the mend praise God.
And I'm praying against any of the side effects from the drugs.

But another praise, I love my doctor, I love UCLA,
and truly love the demeanor of every doctor I've come across there.
If I ever move I will miss having this kind of medical care.

On to happier things.... instagram fun!

We finally went to play at a newly renovated park.
(This was long before the foot incident)
And went fishing at a nearby lake.
I think this is one of my all time favorite instagram pics.
Daddy took the kids out for the day.
I had a much needed day of rest.
Ready for church..
Yes, this is how she went.  She said, I'm party pretty girl,
part cowgirl.  And she had the saunter to prove it.
A cowgirl who likes to climb trees.
And sharpen her pocket knife, just like her brother.
This little lady can be demanding sometimes.
Not in a bad way.  She just knows what she wants
and she isn't afraid to express it.
And she is so sweet about it.
Well, she's always asking me to draw things so she can copy them
or color them in.
Sometimes I'm not in the mood or feel like I have too much to do.
But you know her insistence is actually good.
It makes me try things I've been ruminating about, but haven't put on paper.
This was quickly snapped while at one of my four visits to UCLA this week.
Whew.  Just praising God the infection is getting better.
And Miss Piper jumped in the car on the way to school.
So she was my side kick.
I loved watching her watch the world out the window.
Including the crazy dancing banana man.
She looked so innocent and sweet.
And then she puked, all over everything.
That wasn't so sweet.

This picture barely does it justice, but Tuesday night
the moon was gorgeous.
And these girls are so into putting their outfits together.
And this one, is five.
But she's the most independent child I have.
She insists on doing things herself.
Including blow drying her hair.
Love it. :)

And we rounded out our week with a fun tea party.
Well, at first the lady on the left laughed and said,
"It's not a party mom, it's lunch."
But then she got into it, setting up the table just right.
Happy Friday everyone!
Head on over to life rearranged for more snapshots into everyone's week.
