earth day

The most glorious thing happened.
My nine year old requested that we celebrate earth day
with a trip to the beach.
I'm all for celebrations, and all for earth day.
So off to the the beach we went.
First picking up some food for dinner and
my most favorite healthy treat.
And all of a sudden we realized there were whales.
Migrating whales.
These pictures don't do them justice.
It was amazing.  And beautiful.
And it felt like a gift.
God was sharing his wondrous creatures
with us right in the middle of our earth day celebration.

We ran along the shore, following
their journey as long as we could.

My tween was slightly embarrassed.
Worried people were noticing us.
I remember those days.  The self conscious years.
But I said, "They're not looking at us, they're
looking at the whales.  They really could care less
about us and will never see us again.
Just enjoy this moment."

JUST ENJOY THE MOMENT.
I wanted to soak it in forever.
This special visit, by these mighty creatures
so close it felt like you could
touch them if you were brave enough.

And though so many scriptures could fit this moment.
The one that came to my mind was Ephesians 3:20.

"Now all glory to God, who is able,
through his mighty power at work within us,
to accomplish infinitely more than we might
ask or think."

He gifted us with so much more than I could have
ever even imagined to ask or think.

And in the same way, his mighty power at work
within us, can accomplish more than we might
ask or think.

And it takes the weight off doesn't it.
Knowing his power is doing a mighty work.
It's not on us at all.
And what he can do is beyond what we could even imagine.

And to that I say it was a beautiful earth day.
A memory I will cherish.

my job

as a wife, mom, and homemaker is so many things.
I could laundry list them all, but I'm sure you know them well too.

However, today it hit me as we picked up cupcakes to
surprise daughter number two.

If I had to write out a list of my duties,
one of the big ones is to create celebrations.

To celebrate life.
To celebrate them.
To honor them and make sure they feel special.
For those big and little moments.
To be there to hug them and let them know how proud I am.
And man do I feel blessed to be able to do this.
Today was a special one for us.
And I have felt tears brimming all week long over it.

It was her last day at the Lindamood Bell program.
Back when we started in April, she was an anxious child.
Who had shut down in school.
She wasn't progressing.
She wasn't sleeping, she had headaches and stomachaches.
It wasn't a fun place to be as a mom.
There were neuropsych tests and evaluations and meetings
with lots of clinical diagnosis'.
When asked what she remembered from a story just read.
She'd look at you blankly and not say a word.
She was so overwhelmed that things she could do she stopped doing.
But this program methodically worked with her, and she has climbed a mountain.
And can I tell you, a quality of this child that is beyond admirable.
She never, not once complained about going.  Never, at all said it was too hard.
Even though I knew it was for her, she always tries,
and kept right on pushing even when it was challenging.
And she always has that sweet smile on her face.

Today she has progressed to the point of being able to tell you
the details of a story all the way up to a third grade comprehension level.

And her reading, she is at a first grade level, reading chapter books.
It's slow and steady and she still needs help here and there.
This road isn't over, and her dyslexia isn't miraculously gone.
But she has made amazing progress.
Not only academically, but in her confidence.

And I so wanted to celebrate that.
When a child graduates, they all gather round with congratulations.
They're given their bag with their sight words, work books, and a chapter book
chosen as a special gift, signed by their teachers.
This is her lead teacher Alexis.  She is my point person also, meeting with me
and going over Ava's progress every week.
Through this process they work with a different teacher each hour.
But usually there are a few that become their regulars.
And they get to know them well.
They bond with them, learn how to reach beyond the tough shells these
children have formed towards learning.
And they have patience beyond belief.
They keep working, changing things up whenever needed.
To keep these kids moving forward and growing.

I watched it happen not only with my child, but with others.

And I told them, that they've very much become like a
security blanket to me.  Helping me through this transition
into homeschooling.

And I have been very emotional about saying goodbye to these
ladies who have cared for my daughter in such a special way.

It's strange how people can become such an integral part of your life.
And then it's time for our journey to take a turn and we won't be
seeing them on a consistent basis anymore.

But we have promised to come back and visit.
And I pray we can keep on building from where they've left off.

I've been in training sessions and our tutor who'll be helping met with Alexis too.
So that we all can be on the same page, using the same language.

There will be more on this soon, but for now let's get back to celebrating.

This little lady has wanted to visit here all summer long.
And today I surprised her, with a graduation trip to the Santa Monica pier
and a ride on the ferris wheel.

It was a first for all of my kids.  Little Lady #2 up there was a bit apprehensive once we started moving.

But her sister LOVED it.
All in all, it was a beautiful day.
A beautiful celebration.
And a blessing to be able to celebrate her.

An Adorable Carnival

I wanted to share my friend's most adorable carnival party yesterday.  She is super gifted at throwing the cutest parties... and is especially good at making her cakes so detailed and special.  I loved this one and the day was so much fun all around.

My kids loved it, including my 8 year old son.  She was worried he'd think it was too babyish.  He said it was the best party ever.

They loved the friendship.

The games.

The tickets.

The prizes.

The jumpy.

And most of all the cupcakes at the end.
Happy 5th Birthday A.

Back To School Celebration

I have to completely give credit to Stephanie Nielson for this idea.  I've followed her blog for a couple of years now.  She's an amazing woman and mother.  I admire her determination to do all she can for her kids.

My middle daughter Ava starts kindergarten tomorrow.  A couple of weeks ago I shared this idea of having a Back To School Party.  They all love parties and heartily agreed it sounded like a great idea.

They're like me and love the idea of a theme.  I let Ava take the lead since this is her kindergarten year.  She wanted an Under the Sea theme with mermaids and seahorses.

Great I thought.  So we dug out our kid cookbooks and I said ok, you guys get to come up with the menu.

They looked at all the pictures and came up with fruit salad, seaweed, sushi, pita sandwiches, oh and rootbeer floats.

I totally spaced on that one when I made up the menu last night... I thought we said smoothies.  They made sure to correct me today while we were out shopping for the things we still needed.

I was going to draw up some designs for the menu and decorations, but Ava beat me to the punch.
I LOVED what she came up with so we scanned the drawings and I used them for the menu and she taped them around to decorate the table and window.  Her crown with the glitter designs and adorable mermaid are so much more memorable than anything I would have done.  She was so excited planning and getting ready.  And quite honestly I love that they did it mostly all themselves.
I was just there to help.

Jackson's crown is based of Aquos the water sign from a game he likes to play.  Audrey did make a crown, but it hurt she said and since she is a 'real' princess the princess crown was more appropriate.

The thing they were most excited about was making our own sushi.  We never have.

I got the bamboo rolling thing at World Market.  While we were there I found cute little chopsticks made easy for kids.  Oh and the chalkboards for their names.

I chose a theme scripture for the school year,
"Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue,
but with actions and in truth."
1 John 3:18

To us this scripture is going deeper, to the heart.  It's easy to say I love you.  It takes more from you to show it in action.  We want to encourage them to be slow to anger, helpful, appreciative of what they have, and of the people in their lives.

As a parent I want to lead by example showing that it's important to give of yourself, your time and resources.  That these are ways to show the love of Jesus to others.  One of the hardest things I think for kids to understand is that it's important to do for others even, and especially when we don't feel like it.  So these are some of our intentional goals to focus on this year.

But today it was all about the celebration of a new school year.

I am excited for them, but am slightly sentimental tonight as I think of my little Ava Grace going to kindergarten.  How is it possible this day has come?  I pray for her a year full of growth, health, learning and new friendships.  I pray she'll hold onto her creativity and blossom in confidence.  I pray most of all she'll grow in her love for Jesus and always find her strength and identity in Him.

A New Beginning

Yesterday our babysitter got married.  She isn't just any babysitter.  She's the person we entrusted our kids to while we went on our first ever five-day-trip without them.  It's saying a lot that we trust her that much.

I knew my girls especially would love seeing her get married.  My son on the other hand was slightly grossed out about the part where they have to kiss.  But he played cool and didn't show that the whole thing weirds him out.  He says, "I can't believe that one day I'll do that".  Oh soon enough his feelings will change.  But right now I'm happy that he's not into all that stuff.

The girls however, love to play pretend 'marry' all the time.  What is it that makes little girls begin at such a young age dreaming of the day they'll say, "I do."  I don't remember playing this way myself.  But I probably did.  Or at least I believed that one day I'd dress up and my prince would carry me away.
I recently found a scrapbook I made for my husband shortly after we were married.  In it I actually called him my prince charming.  So I did think that way.  I guess every girl does.

When I was younger I don't think I really understood that only Jesus can be our true prince.  He is the one who should come first and foremost in our lives.  I definitely know there were times when I placed my husband in too high a position in my mind and expectations.

That's not fair to him and it's not fair to Jesus.
When we put Jesus front and center, we can love those in our lives better.

It's comforting knowing there really is a fairytale where the one true Prince will ride in on a white horse with a happy ending.  A glorious ending.  He is our hero, the final victor over all that is evil.  I praise God for that and get chills every time I think of how Jesus has conquered it all.

I saw heaven standing open
and there before me was a white horse,
whose rider is called Faithful and True.
Revelation 19:11

It is almost 14 years since we said I do.
There are many things I would do differently with the dedication of our lives united with God in the covenant of marriage.  I considered myself a faith filled person back then.  But my faith has grown so much more.  And honestly I was a bit too stressed out about too many silly details.  For example.. the flowers.  Oh don't get me started.  I think my perspective was a little off.

I was young and hadn't learned a lot.  We hadn't experienced so much of life that we have now.  We hadn't shared so many adventures, so many firsts, so many moments of joy.  We also hadn't weathered the storms that would come our way.  We hadn't even seen the challenges that were ahead.

There's something special about seeing the new beginning of a new life together.  That blissful feeling that all is perfect and well.  It's a clean slate.  It's the way it should be when two become one.

But I also have come to love the story of a life lived together, through the good times and bad.  There's something about learning to put God first in your marriage and walking hand in hand through life's trials and tests and seeing your love grow to an even deeper level.

When you get married you think you're so in love and you are.  But amazingly through the years I've realized that my love is so much deeper and stronger now.  It's stronger for seeing my husband care for us and work hard for us and step up and do the right thing, when the right thing is hard.  Seeing him as the spiritual leader and companion and confidant God meant him to be in my life.  Seeing the Jesus in him as the years have gone by has made me love him even more than the day I said I do.

The best part is that in some ways this feels like it's just the beginning too.  We have so many years ahead of us and life to live together.

I wish Broc and Nicole the very best.  Blessings for years of growing stronger in their love for each other and for God in the center of their marriage and their lives.

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,
like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
  "Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
  Fine linen, bright and clean,
    was given her to wear."
Revelation 19:6-8
